MISSION STATEMENT
St. John’s Lutheran Church of Waller, Texas strives to be a welcoming, growing, and serving community of faith, centered around God’s Word and the Sacraments. We seek to provide fellowship, support, and a place to begin and nurture a living relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Saint John's Lutheran Church, is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is about celebration, joy and continual Thanksgiving.
For more than 100 years, Saint John's has been dedicated to being the body of Christ in Waller.
We're a group of caring, loving people with open hearts and minds who gather for worship, education, fellowship and mutual encouragement.
The Rev. Cheryl Lamaak graduated in May 2007 from Wartburg Theological Seminary (WTS) in Dubuque, IA. She served at Elim Lutheran, Marquette, KS; Christ Lutheran, Georgetown, TX; and Lakeside Lutheran Church, League City, TX. On October 1, 2023, she was called as the full-time pastor at St. John’s, Waller, TX and looks forward to journeying with the members of SJLC and seeing where God leads and guides the faith community and herself. SJLC and her share a passion for hunger ministry and serving the wider community.
Prior to seminary, Pr. Lamaak graduated from Mount Mercy College/University in Cedar Rapids, IA with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and minors in psychology and sociology. During and after college, she worked at Four Oaks in residential treatment and group home care; Family Service Agency as a court ordered supervisor; LSSI children’s adoptive support group facilitator; Lutheran Social Service of Illinois as a Child Welfare Specialist; and Lutheran Social Services in Iowa as a caseworker.
Later, Pr. Lamaak felt called by God to work within the church as a Director of Youth and Family Ministries at St. Stephen’s Lutheran in Cedar Rapids, IA and Faith Lutheran in Cedarburg, WI. This work allowed her to engage with many generations while continuing to explore the Gospel’s call to social justice and helping to make connections between home, church, and community.
In 2002, Pr. Lamaak entered seminary and had the honor of being selected to participate in WTS’s student exchange program with the Augustana Hochshule in Neuendettelsau, Germany. In January 2005, she returned to Germany in order to live and work with the Evangelishches Augustinerkloster in Erfurt for her J-Term. This was especially meaningful as it was the site in which Martin Luther lived and celebrated his first Mass.
Shortly after returning from Erfurt, Pr. Lamaak was one of seven ELCA seminarians to be selected to serve her internship through Global Mission. She served as interim pastor at the American Church in Berlin for one year and witnessed first-hand the amazing diversity and richness of the body of Christ in this international, ecumenical church.
She was a foster parent with Upbring (formerly Lutheran Social Services of the South) from 2013-2016. In April 2016, Pr. Lamaak adopted her two sons.
